What are the cons of using sand to weight your baby?

Postby cuddlebabiesnursery » Wed Nov 11, 2009 2:54 pm

I was just wondering. Sand is less expensive and is heavier. I know some people are afraid of leaks, but what if the sand was ensured in many layers of bags to keep it from spilling out?
& another thing, I've heard the reason why people do not use sand is because if it gets wet it may smell? Is that true?

Hi i think one of the reasons is because if you want to send your dolls to a buyer abroad then it cant go through customs with sand in it .. wendy :-)

Hi the baby i bought my daughter is filled with sand and is weighted beautifly, the lady sells her babies on ebay and lists that sand is used. We've had her 5 months now and it doesnt smell. It will be interesting to hear if this can happen.

The reason I don't use it is because you cannot send abroad if you do.

Thanks for the info =)
I was really curious about the whole sand deal because I truly think it would be easier to get sand instead of beads because I would have to A) order them online or B) Drive an hour and buy them at Joanne fabrics. When I could just drive to lowes 5 minutes down the road and pick up some sand.
I'm tempted to try out the sand

if you do use sand make sure its childrens play sand which is a bit dearer but it has been washed and treated and is entirely safe. if it did leak they could make sand castles..joke? i used it not knowing in my first baby several months ago ,no problems. with love treacle pudding x x

Thanks for the tips!
A quick question:
Why can't sand pass through the customs??
Why can't it be shipped world-wide?

apparently it is because of insects ,thats what i have been told, they can live in sand undetected. but if you are using playground sand which has been treated when it leaves the shop then it all depends on where you store it etc. they also lay eggs in it ,again it all depends on storage etc. but whatever you still cant ship them abroad. so if you intend not to with correct care and aslong as you seal the area correctly then its your choise as long as the buyer is informed. hope this helps with love treacle pudding x x x it does have a nice weight and i have a couple of babies from moons ago with sand no trouble up to yet. but i think your better off using ultra fine glass,. polly pellets and the baby fat. keep it above board, treacle x x x

Thanks for all of the information, Treacle!
I had decided a while back not to use the sand. I decided on using non rust pelletes.
They work very well! & that way I can send my babies abroad.

I would say that sand is fine to use, but you cannot sent it abroad.
