Quality of mohair?

Postby flossigirl » Tue Jan 26, 2010 2:47 pm

Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody knows of the different types of mohair available?

I have read about some people talking about the quality of hair used as this affects the end result.

Is this true and if so what difference do you notice this makes?

All help appreciated.

Many thanks

Like many of us I started off by using cheap roving mohair. Providing you have the time and patience to comb and condition you will lose about 75% of it, so your cost has already quadrupled, not to mention time wasted.
In many ways with mohair the simple truth is you get what you pay for. I buy my mohair from Slumberland in Canada. It looks and feels like real baby hair and has no waste. One 1/2oz pack will root about 3 dolls and comes in 5" lengths.
I rooted my Christmas baby using it.I hope you can see just how soft and silky it looks [ and no, I don't have shares in the company. It really is that good. ] What I have learned from my mistakes is the expensive mohair worked out cheaper to use than the cheapest.

i totally agree with jean!

buy the best you can afford i started out using the cheap stuff off ebay and then swapped some quality mohair with someone from america and just could not believe the diference!
i now spend as much as i possibly can on my mohair in the long run it's well worth it

the problem with the cheap stuff is it is very frizzy and often you can tell that it is cheap if you know what i mean

Lindsey, I would never go back to using cheap mohair. Now I have the problem of having a pile of the stuff ranging in cost from cheap to about £15.00 an ounce and my conscience won't let me put it on ebay to get rid of it.

Happy you like my baby. She is Philomena Donnelley's ' Sweet Maria '
reborn as Emma and lives with her new mummy in Hong Kong.

Hugs
Jean
