I think a lot of sculptors swear by Cernit but I think it is just the American equavelant of Sculpy. I have used super sculpy and it was fine, as long as you buy from a reputable supplier that has stored it correctly you should be fine with Sculpy.

Look forward to seeing your first try.

l use fimo clay cath it is great to work with and smoothes easy it seems to keep its shape well.also if your hands are warm can make the clay you are using soft,as you work with it.l always have a pack of baby wipes handy keeps your hands clean and cools them to.

CERNIT IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT TO SCULPY, IT MELTS , BASICALLY, BOTH IN YOUR HANDS AND WHEN YOU TRY TO BAKE IT . IT ALSO DOESNT 'BLEND LIKE SCULPY , PROSCULPT OR LIVING DOLL, ITS MORE LIKE MODELENE, WHICH HAS TO BE OVERLAID IN ONE SHEET TO AVOID ANY NASTY JOIN MARKS.
NOT A CLA Y I WOULD RECCOMEND , AND CERTAINLY NOT FOR BEGINNERS.

i would stick with super sculpy or living doll. ( prosculpt is the same as living doll)
fimo is fine if you like your clay harder, but i find it too hard to soften and blend nicely
