Mohair and doe suede - possibly a silly question

Postby Lindley » Thu Mar 26, 2009 6:30 pm

I was wondering if the mohair and doe suede for hair and bodies come from, um, dead animals? It may seem a silly question, but I can't tell if it's called doe suede because it's leather suede or if that's just a reference to the texture, and if the mohair is shorn or if animals are killed to farm it. It wouldn't have occurred to me, but I bought a mohair wig for another kind of doll once, and it was beautiful, but still attached to animal skin.

And if the mohair isn't shorn, can anyone suggest a source for a synthetic alternative?

I'm grateful for any help!

All of the mohair that ive bought has been shorn from the animal. Some wil say from which cutting ie: 1st cut from a youngster, which is very fine, then 2nd and 3rd which gets a bit denser and courser as the animal grows. I dont think I would buy it if they killed the poor thing first just for its hair. The doe suede as far as I can tell is synthetic made and not from an animal. Most will say 'faux doe suede' which as you know means 'fake'. :-) Hope that helps.

Thank you! I probably wouldn't have worried except for the wigs I'd bought, but I really appreciate the reassurance.
